Rising prices for used plastic which are 10% higher than virgin sources in the US trouble Coca-Cola's plastic bottle recycling facility in Spartnaburg, S.C. This is one of the reasons Coke is using only 5% of recycled plastic in new PET bottles, down from 10% five years ago.

Bottle deposit programs which provide an incentive of 5 or 10 cents per bottle returned for consumers can increase recycling rates by as much as 100%. This is supported by data from 10 states with bottle-deposit laws where PET recycling rates are more than double the national average. Other policy measures like "extended producer responsibility" and its variations can also increase recycling rates.

Coke, Pepsi and other beverage companies say bottle-depost programs are costly, inefficient and unfair because they single out beverage containers which make less than 5% of the waste stream and advocate co-collection of materials. Coke also sources its materials for Spartnaburg plant from curbside programs and says its working with municipalities to improve the quality of PET from such programs.

Coke's plans for the future include 100% recycling or reuse of its bottles by 2020 and 10% recycled plastic in its PET bottles again by next year.
